During my military service in The Netherlands I was a road vehicle driver. After study in Leiden, The Netherlands, to become a transport-history orientated museum educationalist I moved to England in March 1989 and initially became a London Transport trained bus driver and then a British Rail trained train driver. Having been taken off trains in 2002 following discovery of coronary problems and loss of hearing bad enough to disqualify me from driving trains, I additionally became conversant with customer facing positions, traincrew management, traincrew competence management and work in the signalbox or traffic control centre. Consequently you will find that the point of view in this book tends to be that of someone with direct experience of operational positions behind the windscreen or with control of road vehicle and train movement.
